I found your blog today and I love it. I started using photoshop in 2007, and it was very frustrated because I did not know how to use it. And my hubby did not want to tell me how to use it, not even a tip or nothing. I was lost !! ...so of course, I looked for tutorials and learned some stuff. Then, I got so interested in photography since my baby girl was born & wanted to learn retouching techniques. I was so happy when I found those "blurring techniques" LOL.. It was not until last month I think that I found about the D&B technique, and what a difference. I still get frustrated because it takes a long time and still do not look great. So I practice and practice and practice. Still not so good LOL, but someday I will get better. I hope !

Haha, I can always tell when someone abuses the gausian blur filter.
This is fantastic advice. When you get down to it, this applies quite universally in art, not just photo retouching. A lot of aspiring artists don't understand the importance of mastering the basics and are more interested in copying the look of a pro and how to get it as easy and fast as possible with shortcuts and memorizing formulas that they then apply to everything. But art is not formulaic, and all this along with their lack of foundation does show in their work. I wish more people could appreciate this, keep up the good work!

Thanks Chi, the truth is there are no trade secrets, just developing a good eye and years of practice. There are quite a few good methods and techniques for utilising Photoshop's toolset, any retouching tutorials worthy of note will be those that explain how Photoshop works, 'step-by-step's are rarely of use.

A lot of it comes down to preference, everyone has their own workflow. Amy Dresser for example uses a surprisingly destructive workflow, notably dodging and burning directly onto her working layer. I certainly wouldn't recommend that anyone who isn't as talented as Ms. Dresser follow this method :) The secrets are just personal workflow touches that come from a sound knowledge of the tools.
